Ly Son district is well-known for garlic farming in Quang Ngai province. Its product has been widely used but still lacking a brand name which seems to be the first priority by now.
Ly Son garlic is a local specialty which is more preferable to other varieties as it is medium in size, white, tasty, and often used as a remedy. It is carried to Hue, Da Nang, Can Tho, v.v. However, lacking of a brand name makes it sometimes mistaken for some other varieties. Its prices come between VND 100000 – 120000 per kg in Ho Chi Minh city, VND 60000 – 70000 per kg in other districts of Quang Ngai, and, but only between VND 40000 – 45000 per kg in its homeland.Ly Son district has 297ha under garlic farming with annual output of about 1700 MT. it takes from 5 – 6 months each crop and the harvested garlic must be trimmed up and exposed to the sun from 15 – 20 days before putting in use. Every 500m2 costs an expenditure of from VND 5 – 6 million. In 2006, relevant authorities took necessary steps to get it a brand name and it is expected that Ly Son garlic will soon be known abroad.
